Originally designated as a public square, Hemming Park is Jacksonville’s first and oldest park. It now comprises of a 1.5-acre parcel. In 1866, the hiers of Isaiah D. Hart—the founder of Jacksonville—sold the area to the city for $10. For ages, this park became the hub of commerce and the public meeting place for citizens everywhere. Known as the heart of downtown for over a century, it the cultural and social center of the city. In 1978, when the grass was removed, the park was redesigned into a plaza. The Friends of Hemming Park seek to breathe life back into the heart of our city once again in hopes of revitalization of Jacksonville.

Themission of Friends of Hemming Park is to transform Jacksonville’s oldest public park into a modern, urban space that engages diverse communities and restores vitality to our city’s public square.
