It’s that time of year where children go back to school! While starting the new year can be exciting for both children and parents, there is also cause for some anxiety. Here are some Back-to-School Tips for Parents that will help both children and parents as we start the school year.
Meet the new teacher, because so many kids are afraid if they will like their new teacher. As a parent, take advantage of the school’s open house or back-to-school night so that you can get better acquainted with your child’s teacher. If you are unable to meet the teacher before school starts, try finding a picture of the teacher either on a school website or in a yearbook.
In addition to meeting the teacher, try touring the school before it begins. Again, attending an open house will help your child familiarize with their environment by finding their desk or classroom or even by playing around on the playground. With older children, challenge them by having them give you a tour of their school as it offers as a great refresher for his memory—and yours!
Reconnect with your child’s school friends. A familiar face and friend will give your child so much less anxiety when going back to school. If your child hasn’t been hanging out with a friend or two over summer break, try calling parents from the last year’s class to see if your child shares a class with them. If they do, be sure to refresh these relationships before school begins, so that your child will come back with much more confidence that they have a friend coming into the school year.
One of the most important things is to ensure you have obtained the items on the class supply list! Be sure to take a special shopping trip with your child, so they can be best equipped with the right tools to start out the new school year and also let them pick out a cool folder or some fun pens.
To avoid the mayhem that can come with the first day of school, practice your school schedule a few days in advance. As the summer probably didn’t give too much of a schedule for your child, this routine a few days before school starts prepares them for a solid school routine and will make them feel more comfortable—and it will make your first day of school go much smoother!
