Back-to-School Tips for Parents

July 29th, 2016

It’s that time of year where children go back to school! While starting the new year can be exciting for both children and parents, there is also cause for some anxiety. Here are some Back-to-School Tips for Parents that will help both children and parents as we start the school year.

Meet the new teacher, because so many kids are afraid if they will like their new teacher. As a parent, take advantage of the school’s open house or back-to-school night so that you can get better acquainted with your child’s teacher. If you are unable to meet the teacher before school starts, try finding a picture of the teacher either on a school website or in a yearbook.
In addition to meeting the teacher, try touring the school before it begins. Again, attending an open house will help your child familiarize with their environment by finding their desk or classroom or even by playing around on the playground. With older children, challenge them by having them give you a tour of their school as it offers as a great refresher for his memory—and yours!

Reconnect with your child’s school friends. A familiar face and friend will give your child so much less anxiety when going back to school. If your child hasn’t been hanging out with a friend or two over summer break, try calling parents from the last year’s class to see if your child shares a class with them. If they do, be sure to refresh these relationships before school begins, so that your child will come back with much more confidence that they have a friend coming into the school year.

One of the most important things is to ensure you have obtained the items on the class supply list! Be sure to take a special shopping trip with your child, so they can be best equipped with the right tools to start out the new school year and also let them pick out a cool folder or some fun pens.

To avoid the mayhem that can come with the first day of school, practice your school schedule a few days in advance. As the summer probably didn’t give too much of a schedule for your child, this routine a few days before school starts prepares them for a solid school routine and will make them feel more comfortable—and it will make your first day of school go much smoother!

Keep these things in mind when going back to school this year! Most importantly, have a happy healthy 2016-2017 school year!

Timucuan Ecological & Historical Preserve

June 3rd, 2016

The Timucan Ecological & Historical Preserve is one of the last unspoiled coastal wetlands on the Atlantic Coast. Filled with over 6,000 years of human history, come and revel in the beautiful salt marshes, costal dunes and hardwood hammocks. The Timucuan Preserve includes Kingsley Plantation and Fort Caroline.

The culture and history of the Preserve stands over the course of 6,000 years. Prior to European contact, there are stories of native people who survived in the Floridian environment. With European settlement coming in to colonize the “New World,” there was an immense struggle between cultures. This extended all the way to the struggles of enslaved African peoples. In addition to the old culture of the area, modern trends are included such as the growing tourism and present efforts to sustain life all while preserving the environment.

The nature of the Timucuan Ecological and Historical Preserve also has a shared history with humans over 6,000 years. These interactions are extremely evident. Without the interaction of human nature, the Timucuan Ecological and Historical Preserve could have been completely unadaltered and persevering much better. Instead, the spoil islands, altered wetlands, and shell middens of the Timucua have been altered from human interaction. Today, it is important that the land is preserved.

The Timucuan Ecological & Historical Preserve is provides ample information for teachers, adults and children alike to learn more about. For teachers, the website provides lesson plans and more information about planning a field trip to the Preserve. Teachers, please click here for more information. For children, they can visit the Timucuan Preserve Visitors Center, the Fort Caroline National Memorial Visitors Center, the Theodore Roosevelt Area or Kingsley Plantation for Junior Ranger activities to become an official Timucuan Preserve Junior Ranger! To get started, you will need to pick up an application at Fort Caroline and Kingsley Plantation.
